Hall Of Fame: Fletcher

Keith Fletcher has to be one of the most entertaining Forwards to have played for Gateshead in the past ten years.

Keith joined Gateshead after the relegation from the national conference and didn't seem to be much of a player, but after a month or so the Gateshead fans started to see the genius of the legend. His goals would range from over-head kicks to 20 yard curlers. Not only could he score the goals he made them with great vision.

Fletch even got to play for his country of Grenada in 1999 for the World Cup Qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup (scoring for his country as well) while still a Gateshead player.

Fletch made 73 apps for Gateshead and scored 38 goals between 98-01.

Favourite memory of Kieth Fletcher:

While playing against Telford in an FA Cup replay at the International Stadium, Keith was about 15 yards offside and Gateshead was on the attack. The ball was passed forward and keith knew he was offside while Steve preen was running onto it, so Fletcher fell over (like he was shot) so not to be inter fearing with play, and Gateshead went on to score. The man was a Legend.

With Gateshead winning that game they reached the first round proper of the FA Cup to play Cambridge Utd, but lost 1-0 and kieth was sent off in that game as well (but he got us there so, we forgave him).

Tow Law 1 Gateshead FC 2

Not the best game to watch, but it was the result that matters. The main thing is that the mighty Gateshead FC are through to the next round of the Durham cup.

Gateshead fell behind, but showed what it takes to get the win when Steven Istead grabbed a deserved leveller before half time slotting home past the keeper (who was former Gateshead keeper Liam Connell, pictured below).

After half time Gateshead started to show their class with good build up and passing display on the slanty pitch.

A hand ball by a Tow Law defender gave Gateshead a penalty that finished off Tow Law, Ian Clark was the man to step up and score his second penalty in 3 games.
There will only be team ratings on FA cup games and league games, However the Heed Army Blog Man of the Match was Super Steven Istead.
Steven chased every ball, making even a lost cause ball into a half chance putting both defenders and goal keeper under pressure all game.

The Classic Fan Shot!!

Look at these two likely lads at Tow Law, Its Private Clifton and Private Smith (aka smid).

Durham Cup against Tow Law

The Heed Army start their Durham cup Campaign away to the Northern League outfit Tow Law (from COUNTY DURHAM).

Gateshead FC will be looking for their third straight win in all competitions. The word round the camp fire is Gateshead hope to have a great run in the cup this year and get their name on it. (lets hope so).

Tow Law have some former Gateshead names such as Liam Connell and Tom Wade (former manger) so Tuesdays game should have some extra Drama in it.

Lets hope there is a Good Heed Army following at the game, and in full voice through out. HEED ARMY!!!!!!!

Photos from the game will hopefully be on the blog by the next day.

Hall Of Fame: Thompson

Paul "Thommo" Thompson is Gateshead's longest serveing player with ten years at the club, in those ten years Paul has had Brief spells at Stevenage Borough (then conference rivals), Bishop Aukland, Blyth Spartans and Whitley Bay.

Thommo as he became known, Joined Gateshead from Hartlepool Utd. Paul played with other Heed Army legends such as Paul Proudlock and Kenny Lowe and also Steve Bowey.

Paul is famed for his erm, erm, erm. hang on there is something!
Thats right paul is famed for his powerfull headers at the near post and penalty's (most he scored). Paul was part of the Gateshead side that made it to the second round of the FA Cup against Swindon in 2000.

Thommo is close to breaking the all time goal scoring record for Gateshead, needing 13 goals to break Bob Topping record of 129 for the club. (i hope im right on that)

Thommo also had some great haircuts in his time like the example.

Clark Off The Mark

In Saturday's game Ian Clark opened His Gateshead Goals account with a fisrt half penalty against Rossendale Utd.
Ian a former Darlington, Hartlepool Utd and Scarborough player Joined Gateshead in the summer and has played few games so far this season due to injury.
But a fully fit Ian Clark looked very dangerous for the Heed Army on saturday.
Im sure his goal on saturday will be the first of many this season for Gateshead.

Hopefully in the next month or so the Heed Army will have Adam
"MAGIC" Johnston back in the team after missing the begining of the season with a knee injury.

Adam was the leading goal Scorer last season hitting high double figures.

(photo taking by Private Rowan at Blyth last year just after Adam johnston scored)

Adam also gave the fans a cuddle just after this photo was taken, what a guy!!! lol.

Gateshead FC 3 Roseendale Utd 1

A great win for Gateshead in the FA Cup, hopefully this will be a spring board for the team to carry the form into the league.
Gateshead started much the better with lots of clean passing in the opening half hour.
The break through came when Paul "Thommo" Thompson was pushed in the box and the ref gave a penalty.
Ian Clark was the man to step up and slot the ball home.
After half time Steve Istead came on for a Injured Thompson.
Gateshead doubled there lead when Steve Salvin got the ball in the back of the net.
Rossendale pulled one back soon after, But Steve Salvin got on the end of the Rossendale keepers clearence and had the time to control the ball and smack it home from out side the box.

Wayne Edgcumbe had Three spells with Gateshead FC, with his second spell bringing the Happiest time to the Heed Army with his goals.
In the 00/01 season Wayne scored over 20 goals along side Steve Preen up front, in a season which seen Gateshead reach the second round of the FA Cup.
Wayne was a player with lighting pace and left defenders in his wake on route to goal.
Wayne also played for Loacl rivals Blyth Spartans, Spennymoor Utd and Crook Town.

Gateshead FC 0 Guiseley 1

A few words can describe this game, but there is only one that comes to mind and that is gutting!!
An even first half for boths sides with chances falling for both sides, but no break through came.
In the second half Istead came on for Deverdics in an effort to open up Guiseleys defence but to no avail.
Paul Thompson lead the front line winning a good 70% of the headers but only to find no team mates making the runs to support in the attacks.
David Southern ran all day again getting crosses into the box, but yet again no team mates following up the good build up play to finsih it off.
Guiseley's goal came from the sub (the biggest player ive seen for a while) on the 82nd minute to kill Gateshead off.
GUTTING!!!

The Season So Far

Well the season hasnt started the way most of the Heed Army might have thought, with Gateshead FC winning the there first game followed by two draws and three defeats.
leaving Gateshead in 18th place afetr six games in the Unibond Premier league.

On the plus side new signings such as David Sourthern has settled in well on his return to the club after succesful stints at Dunston Fed and Newcastle Blue Star. David won the Northern league title with both clubs. David has scored 3 times so far this season.

Also this season Paul "Thommo" Thompson is trying to break the goal scoring for Gateshead, needing just 13 more goals to break Bob Toppings record of 129 if im not mistaking.

North Ferriby 3 Gateshead FC 1

I wasnt at the Game so i have no little match report or photo's from this game.

Abit of a gutter to hear the Gateshead Boys got beat at North Ferriby, David Sourthern got Gateshead's goal late in the game. His 3rd of the season.

Sure a big win is round the corner.

COME ON THE HEED ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gateshead FC 2 Ashton Utd 3

Well what can you say, Gateshead took the lead with a great free kick into the box ending up with James Curtis nodding the header into the net.
Ashton got level before the break, after the break Gateshead took the lead with a powerfull shot from David Southern (pictured) from outside the box.
Ashton utd got level again with a cross into the box to find a Ashton player unmarked to header a louping ball into the net.
The iceing on the cake came for Ashton with a fantastic solo effet from their number 9, lost his markers and fired a shout from just inside the 18 yard box.
