Turned Blue!

Three of last season players have left to join local UniBond Div 1 side Newcastle Blue Star, Steve Bowey, Jamie McClen and Paul Brayson.

McClen who spent the back end of last season on loan at Blue Star was the first to sign, shortly Followed by then Heed captain Steve Bowey.
Bowey left under a cloud of smoke over contractual agreements, which he felt he had been let down by the club. This coming after Bowey had agreed to the contract offer he had been offered before hand.

Paul Brayson seemed to have placed himself in a bidding war between Gateshead and Blue Star, GFC did not want to be caught up in it, and gave Brayson his offer and a deadline to accept.
Brayson did not respond to the offer and the rest is history as they say.

Three very talented players have dropped to a level below their skills, money talks and everyone has to make a living, football fans often forget this. But the question on every Heed fans lips, why drop two leagues after reaching the Conf North????

With the summer break well and truly upon us, new faces are arriving and familiar faces are leaving for pastures new.

Phil Cave could well be a face that leaves in the coming weeks as he searches for a contract in the professional ranks. Cave had a fantastic first year with the Heed, netting 11 goals and hardly ever putting a foot wrong. Rumour’s in the local press are that Scottish side Livingston could be Phil’s destination.
Even if Phil was to stay with the Heed next term, he faces a battle for the left back position with new arrival John Blackstone. The Heed Army wishes Phil all the best if he does leave.

Steve Bowey has left the Tynesiders to play UniBond First Division North with Newcastle Blue Star. His departure was a little unexpected after Captaining the team to promotion last season. But regardless of being a firm favourite with the Heed Army, the team has to move on and forward. His departure gives Phil Turnbull the opportunity to show his playing making skills.

Paul Brayson has been quoted in the local press as saying he is considering an offer from both Newcastle Blue Star and Gateshead. The former Reading and Cardiff City striker helped the Heed achieve promotion in the play-off’s with some important goals, and showed phases of brilliance. Though his all round game was iffy to say the least at times, but he has class, a class that gets goals from nothing.

Graeme Armstrong and winger Wayne Phillips have also both re-signed for the Tynesiders after both enjoying a successful first season.

Fan favourite Steve Salvin is to stay with the Heed, the Vice-Captain had asked to be placed on the transfer list after fears he may not be able to give fully to Gateshead due to work commitments.
The battling midfielder won the hearts of the Heed Army with his heart on his sleeve performances that won so many games over the past two seasons.

Salvin will be a chief candidate for Club Captain after Steve Bowey left the club to join minnows Newcastle Blue Star in the UniBond Division 1 North. Also a player you would guess to be in the running to be club captain would be James Curtis, the big red machine also bleeds GFC and would be perfect in the role!

As reported on the Official Club Site, Gateshead have signed left back John Brackstone.

The former Darlington and Hartlepool United player joins the Heed After being one of nine first team players to have been released by Darlington last week.

John, a Hartlepool lad will join former team mates Carl Jones and Phil Turnbull at Gateshead having all been on the book at Hartlepool United.

Ian Bogie seems to have wasted no time in building his team for next season with Phil Cave not signing a new contract, the signing of Brackstone show that progress stands still for no man. Cave has been reported to be trying to go pro with Scottish side Livingston.

More signings look to be unveiled in the coming weeks, players with football league experience seem to be the target for the Tynesiders as they push to have another great season, this time in the Conf North.

Player Review: Bowey

Steve Bowey, As Gateshead’s Captain Steve added the zip and pip to the Heed midfield that has been lacking over the last few season.
His second stint at the club rekindled memory’s of yesteryear, seeing the bleach blonde hair flying through on goal.

Steve managed to lead the team by example this season scoring 8 times, much to the joy of the Heed Army. Although there had been fears of not seeing the Bowey of old when he returned, he was first man on the pitch and the last man off. At the age of 33 he showed how it was done and done properly.

As with the last review it seem we have found out that like Vice Captain Salvin, Bowey may have played his last game for the club. It would appear Bowey, who is in the latter stages of his career is being offered less in his contract and Bowey would have liked more.
The Heed Army Blog would like to wish Steve Bowey all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts at the club.

Player Review: Salvin

Steve Salvin, the powerhouse behind Gateshead’s promotion. His drive and relentless pursuit of the ball made watching him a true delight. He wears he heart on his sleeve and just as proudly the Captains armband in his vice captain roll when Bowey was not in the team.

Steve played much of the season in defence after the pre-season injury to Steve Baker. Salvin slotted in with Curtis to form a great partnership, there build up play from the back must be reasonable for at least 30% of Gateshead goals this season. While talking about goal Steve managed to score nine goals this term, no mean feat for a player playing out of position. Sadly news has broke that Steve has handed in a transfer request, his work commitments has become larger and sadly football is having to take the back seat in his life. This is a great shame as Steve would have taken the step up to the Conf North easily.
The Heed Army Blog Wishes Steve all the best and hope to see him Ina Heed shirt in the future!

Player review: Jones and Turnbull

The two young lads came in and set there stall out, they didn’t get pushed off the ball, they dictated the ball.

Carl Jones at the back gave a master class in defending from his very first game, his presence alongside the mighty Curtis gave the Heed at formidable back line.
Jones has been rocked by injury’s in the past and have hampered his football league career, being stuck down twice as he was Gaining first team football at York City and Hartlepool United. But since pulling on the colours of GFC Jones has stood tall and bounced out of every tackle, much to the delight of jones himself.

Phil Turnbull also had a impact in midfield, giving fresh options in the push for the play-offs and the promotion that followed.
Turnbull’s style of play is that of Heed Army legend Paul Proudlock, his vision is like that of a hawk, picking out team mates from 2 yards to 42 yards with pin point passes.
Phil like Jones also played for York City and Hartlepool united, but has really found his feet since he arrived at Gateshead.
Both players are young and very exciting prospects, thank go they play for the Heed!!!

Player Review: Curtis

James Curtis has stuck with the Heed through thick and thin since he joined the club.
If any a players deserved to be in a promotion team it was James, from his bad jokes to fantastic tackles on the pitch he is surely the first name on Ian Bogies team sheet as he is a all round team player.

He missed a section of the season through injury, and was a massive miss in Gateshead defence. His partnerships he formed with both Steve Salvin and Carl Jones at the back were so impressive, he knew where every player was on the pitch at all times. James has had many offers to move away from the Heed to play at a much higher level, but he has gave his all for the club and fans. For this the Heed Army are truly grateful, and look forward to see James lead from the back as ever next season.

Player Review: Cave

Phil Cave, another product of the Newcastle United youth system joined the Tynesiders last summer after being linked with several league clubs.

Many Gateshead fans can be forgiving for first thinking that Cave, with his slight frame would be a boy playing a mans game. But from the very first minute to the last minutes Phil battled and controlled the ball in every match this year.
Phil also found the back of the net 11 times this season, a fantastic achievement for his first year at the club and extra special from the left back position.
Although Phil has done so much in his first season , you just know there is a lot more to come from this exciting local lad.

Player Review: Baxter

Craig Baxter has made the right back position his own over the past two years. His pace, tackles and crosses into the box are so important to the teams over all play.
The former Newcastle United youth player is a cut above and will sure look to good for the Conf North as he did for the UniBond.

Craig managed to find the back of the net three times this season, but it was his assists that must have been in double figures that really made him stand out.

Craig plays to a very high standard each game and very rarely has a bad performance, it’s a testament to his all round game, it little wonder why he has become a fan favourite.

Player Review: Musselwhite

Paul Musselwhite took a few games to settle in when he first joined the team, but soon became the lynch pin in the Heed’s defence.
There was a few worry’s of Paul’s age maybe stopping him from moving freely about the box and getting down to stop shots. But the 39 year old turned back the years while in a Heed shirt, his command and presence in the box was great to witness.
Paul kept 10 clean sheets in the last 13 games of the season, a fantastic achievement no matter level of football.
Although Mussa had a great end to the season will he be here next season?? Only time will tell.

The Conf North does allow 5 substitutes, maybe the heed will retain Paul for next year as cover or in competition with another keeper.
Musselwhite’s experience is very had to come by and has been invaluable to the Tynesiders, who knows could Paul become part of the backroom staff as a player coach next year?

The Curtain Falls

The curtain has fallen on the season, and what a season its been!

One Cup Final and promotion to the Blue Square Conference North has left the Heed Army looking forward to the summer with excitement for the new season that’s round the corner.

Its safe to say we will see some face’s leave the Tynesiders in the summer and we will see new faces arrive. This years team has been one of the best for over 14 years and very much deserved the promotion and accolade that comes their way.

Ian Bogie and his assistant Jeff Wrightson have to take a lot of the praise for the success that the Tynesiders have had. The pair who were childhood friends have transformed Gateshead with the professional touch the team needed.

While we are still talking about praise, Chairman Graham Wood and Directors Brian Waites and Derek Bell have been the men who have master minded the rise of GFC off the pitch. Over the space of two and a half years the difference between GFC of 2005 and GFC of 2008 is immense.
You only have to look at the club site to see the number of sponsors and companies working with Gateshead.
As a result the club as a hole has raised higher than most Heed fans could have dreamed, not only Have we gained promotion to the Conf North, but the fan base and interest in all thing Heed is on the rise, Thanks to these three man and the unsung hero’s behind the sense!!

We have reached 28,000 visitors in just two and a half years, these figures are a welcome shock as the Blog did not expect to get more than a couple of hundred visits.

Sunderland Reserves 2 Gateshead 0 Durham Cup Final

As the sun set over Wearside, the cry’s of HEED ARMY echoed around the Stadium of Light as a 800 strong Following for Gateshead geared up for the Durham Cup Final.

The opening exchanges were cagey and tentative to say the least with Heed players miss placing the odd pass and loosing footing on the slick premiership pitch.

15 minutes in and Sunderland Reserves took the lead after Billy Dennehy found the back of the Tynesiders net. Paul Musselwhite could do little to stop the goal.

The rest of the first half was in Sunderland’s control with the odd Gateshead attack being easily broken down on the edge of the Sunderland box.

After half time Gateshead stepped up a gear and did push forward with more purpose, but a Missed Steve Salvin Tackle let Sunderland straight through on the Heed goal for David Dowson to double the Black Cats lead.
Gateshead had a few chances in front of goal as the second half went on, with the best chance falling to Davie Southern how seemed to change his mind while one on one with the keeper. He ended up Passing a half paced ball instead of pulling the trigger, Sunderland’s Carson watched the ball trickle past for a goal kick.

In all it was a good night and the travelling Heed Army made them selves heard all over the Premiership stadium. It would have been the icing on the cake for what has already been a fantastic season seeing the Tynesiders promoted.

Durham Cup Final Preview

With hangovers and bad heads still fresh in the memory from Saturdays

celebrations, we now turn to concentrate on the Durham Cup Final at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland Reserves stand in the way of the Heed Army collecting their second piece of silverware. Sunderland Reserves are one of the better academy sides in the country and will be tough opposition for the Tynesiders.

Paul Brayson (pictured Below) and Carl Jones are sadly unavailable for this match, as they didn’t play in the earlier rounds of the competition. Steve Salvin will fill in for Jones and Southern and Armstrong will fill in for the missing Brayson.

The Heed Army will be in fine voice and looking to make Wearside Know he Tynesiders are in town!!!

Gateshead 2 Buxton 0 (Play-Off Final)

All the hard work paid off for the Tynesiders on Saturday afternoon when they won promotion to the Conference North.

Ian Bogie’s had the better of the play in the first half, yet Buxton kept every man behind the ball to try and stop Gateshead passing game.
Buxton came with the plan to stop the Heed midfield creating opportunity’s in and around the Buxton box.

Davie Southern had the best chance for opening the scoring in the first half with a header at the far post, only to put it wide.

The Second half came to life just 4 minutes in, when Kris Gate beat 3 players with a shimmy, a shammy and another shimmy, then placed the ball in the back of the net to send the 1.400 strong crowd into a uproar with celebration.

With hearts pounding Gateshead went in search of another goal to killer the game off, Paul Brayson had a great chance to double the lead only to sky the ball over the bar.

Brayson will always get chance’s and his next chance was the one to clinch promotion to the Conference North. On 79 minutes Brayson latched onto a through ball and left the Buxton defenders in his wake as he bared down on the keeper, and then gave a cheeky little lob to send the ball into the back of the net.

The party started and the Heed Army Gave there all for the lads!!!

In The Chairman's words

The Heed Army Blog has been lucky enough to be able to get a message from GFC Chairman Graham Wood a head of Saturdays Play-Off Final.

Here is Graham Message:

The blogmaster has asked me if I'd like to send a message to the fans ahead of Saturday's all important play-off final and I'm most grateful for the opportunity.

Firstly, my heartfelt thanks to you all for your magnificent support throughout the season, with special thanks for last Tuesday night, when, in keeping with the team's performance, you were just awesome. As Ian Bogie has already commented, it was as good as having an extra man.

As to Saturday's game, as you would expect, nobody is taking anything for granted. Buxton wouldn't be in the final of the play-off's if they weren't a good side and they'll be eager to show their fans and themselves that they're a lot better than the 0-9 aggregate which resulted from our two recent meetings would suggest.

I have to say that Gateshead are currently playing with the kind of self belief that I've seldom seen and anything other than a Gateshead victory is hard to predict, but we must fully recognise that, as with every game we play, winning doesn't come by right.

Whatever happens on Saturday, one thing is sure. This club is on the up and you are playing a vital role in the process.

I know I don't need to ask you to get behind the team on Saturday, that's an absolute given. Enjoy the day and thank you again.

Gateshead Vs Buxton (Play-Off Final)

After the exploits of Tuesdays Play-Off Semi Final the attention turns to Saturday afternoon and the visit of Buxton for the Play-Off Final.

Gateshead’s last to encounters with Buxton have been a whitewash with two big score lines for Gateshead, both home and away.
The away victory of 4-0 on the 15th of April was a moral boosting win against fellow Play-Off hopefuls, goals from Phil Cave, Davie Southern, Steve Bowey and Kris Gate was enough on that cold Tuesdays night.
The home victory seen Buxton field a weakened side and fell to a crushing 5-0 defeat only last Saturday. Gateshead will not be entering this game thinking it will be as easy as the last two matches with Buxton, this is the Play-Off Final and the first goal will be crucial to decide who will be triumphant.

Buxton made to the Final of the Play-Offs after wining on penalty’s against long time league leaders Witton Albion on Tuesdays night Other Semi Final.

Davie Southern became the clubs leading goal scorer for the season after bagging two goals in the win over Eastwood Town, he is only two ahead of Graeme Armstrong who sits on 20 Goals.
Ian Bogie will have a big decision to make this week, will he start on Saturday with the same starting line up as the Semi Final or will he make a few changes??? The Heed Army wait in excitement!!

Gateshead 4 Eastwood 0 (Play-Off Semi Final)

The Tynesiders quest for promotion took one mighty step forward last night with one of the best displays of the season in front of one of the best crowds of the season.

Any pre match worry’s were soon put to rest as Davie Southern headed home after just 3 minutes to send the home crowd wild and the party started.

As if Southern’s goals wasn’t enough to make the mouth water, what the Heed Army witnessed on 13 minutes will live long in the memory of ever Heed fan who seen it.

Paul Brayson fired home a shot from 25 yards straight into the top right corner, pure genius and skill from the former Cardiff City man.

Eastwood did themselves no favours when Shaw found his own net from a Gateshead cross into the box, Eastwood’s travelling support must have been crushed to have been 3-0 down after only 28 minutes. Just on the stroke of half time Southern grabbed his second goal to make sure the result was gonna go Gateshead way.

In the second half Jamie Harwood had a goal disallowed as he was judged to have fouled the keeper, much to disappointment of the Heed Army.

The match was a joy to watch and every player in a Heed shirt did Tyneside proud, Bring on Buxton in the Play-Off Final!!!!!!!!!

Squeaky Bum Time!!!! (Play-Off Preview)

Every Gateshead fan young and old will be experiencing a tight stomach and the tingle that on the Play-Offs can bring.

Eastwood Town stand in the way of the Tynesiders on route to possible glory at the Play-Off final.

The Badgers were the first opposition of the season down at Coronation Park, Gateshead came out on top with a 3-1 win. Wayne Phillips, Steve Salvin and Graeme Armstrong all found the net that day to send the coach load of Gateshead fans home happy.

In March the two sides drew 1-1 with Jamie Harwood notching Gateshead’s goal at the International Stadium in front of 301 people.
It easy to say this is the most important game of the season, and the clubs preparation in the build up to the Play-Offs has been fantastic.

Ian Bogie and Jeff Wrightson have been meticulous in there squad selection over the past few weeks making sure that the whole squad got a rest here and there.
Not only have the squad had rests, but they have been finding form all over the park.

Both Davie Southern and Graeme Armstrong have both reached 20 goals each, while Captain Steve Bowey had hit 3 goals in his last 4 games to take his tally to 8 goals. Defender Phil Cave also has banged in the goals this year, scoring 11 this term.

The mighty Paul Musselwhite has been in outstanding form keeping 8 clean sheets in the last 10 matches, the giant man from originally Portsmouth has been a rock you can depend on of late, lets hope he has a quiet Play off game.

All that is left to say, is Come down on Tuesday night and get behind the boys and sing your heart out for the lads!!!!!!!

Gateshead ended the UniBond league season with a fine win over Play-Off hopefuls at the International stadium.

Ian Bogie watched on as his side ripped apart Buxton with the precise passing that has become a trademark under Bogie.

Ben Hutchinson got a start in the UniBond after having featured in Durham Cup games through out the season. Hutchinson didn’t look out of place in the Heed midfield as many Gateshead first team regulars were rested ahead of next weeks Play-Off semi final. Paul Talbot also made the starting line up as Wayne Phillips was rested from the left hand side, with Phil Cave playing on the left wing.

Jamie Harwood opened the scoring on 22 minutes, after beating the Buxton keeper one on one.

Paul Brayson scored his 7th of the season just before halt time on 44 minutes, after a great cross from Craig Baxter found the former reading mans head.

One minute after half time Gateshead were back in celebration after Davie Southern smacked home from yards to take it to 3-0 on 46 minutes.

On 63 minutes substitute Graeme Armstrong whipped in a cross to find Paul Brayson who calming slotted past the stranded keeper to score his 8th goal in a heed shirt this year.
Southern then took his tally for the season to 20 goals on 83 minutes to wrap up a grand win in the final league game of the season.

The job got done nothing more nothing less, that is all that can really be said about this match.
A low tempo affair, with Gateshead not really risking much but not full attacking either.
The first half only really produced a few half chances, with Graeme Armstrong having the best of them.

Paul Thompson got a rare league start as Ian Bogie continued to rest key players in his 16 man squad. Wayne Phillips and Steve Salvin both return to the starting line up after missing the 4-0 win away to Buxton in midweek.

Although the game was not action packed in the first half the Tynesiders still managed to have more than their fare share of possession.

The second was much the same as first with little sparking into life. Although it was worrying to see James Curtis subbed with what appeared to be a dead leg, as he left the pitch with a slight limp.

Captain Steve Bowey (pictured after he scored) grabbed the winning goal on 67 minutes to give the travelling Heed Army something to cheer about on a cold April afternoon.

Paul Brayson came on as sub and had two great chances to double Gateshead lead, but the Ashton Keeper came out on top.

Ian Bogie “I wish more Gateshead fans could have seen that performance tonight”

Paul Thompson “I have never seen a second half like that in all my time in football” with shock and horror on his face, with a huge glimpse of pride.

The referee “Outstanding a team could play like that on a pitch like this, best I have seen all season”

The first half opened up a cagey affair with both teams wanting to make the first move, Buxton midfielder Anton Foster was a constant danger with his speed and first touch.

Gateshead had the edge in the first half but was a very level match until in the last ten minutes when the Tynesiders pushed for the opener.

Phil Cave drove home a powerful Drive from the edge of the box, it took a big deflection on route to the goal which left Buxton fan favourite Scott Hartley no chance of getting to it.

Just one minute later Paul Musselwhite made the first of to World Class saves, straight from the kick off Buxton pushed for the equalizer only to meet the man mountain Musselwhite.

1-0 at half time Gateshead just on top and good for the lead.

What can only be described as a football master class happen in the second half that took both sets of fans by complete surprise.

On a heavy and greasy pitch the passing display started, from wing to wing, from back to front, not one pass was missed placed, not one tackle or interception mistimed.
Phil Turnbull was in the form a world cup winner picking out passes left right and centre, total midfield general. His link up play was joy to watch as he picked out the forward runs of Harwood and Brayson Time after time.

Davie Southern was also in one mood the goal scoring mood and he powered his way past the two Buxton defender to blast a shot into the bottom corner on 57 minutes, Hartley could only get a finger to ball, but the shot was to powerful.

As if Turnbull, Gate and Harwood was not enough for Buxton to deal with, Steve Bowey was added to mix and made life hell for Buxton. He scored a peach from 18 yards after Gate had rattled the cross bar, Bowey picked up the rebound and slotted it home to pile the misery on Buxton’s home crowd.

Kris Gate was not to be denied after his earlier effort that had hit the cross bar, on 85 minutes he blasted a shot from 25 yards into the bottom corner. It rapped up a outstanding performance from the heed.

Every player in a Heed shirt Tuesday night was in the best form of the season, it was an absolute master class. If we play half as good in the play-offs the Heed Army is in for some exciting times.

The Tynesiders travel to Buxton on Tuesday afternoon looking to carry on their good form ready for the Play-offs.

Buxton are also looking for 3 points to help secure their Play-off place, they sit 4th in the UniBond Premier League just 3 points ahead of Play-off chasing Guiseley in 6th.

Captain Steve Bowey (pictured below) has been in outstanding form of late and will be looking to lead the team by example.

Wingers and Jamie Harwood (pictured below) and Wayne Phillips will no doubt want to carry on where they left off against Prescot cables on Saturday. Both were in best and most dangerous form of the season, it would be no suprise to see ethier score on Tuesday night.

Prescot Cables started the match with some slick passing and the drive of a team coming to out to get a result. This only lasted a mater of minutes as Gateshead got into stride and picked apart the Prescot midfield and defence.

Davie Southern notched his 17th goal of the season as he latched on to rebound, spun and slotted it home past the Prescot keeper.

Six minutes later captain Steve Bowey doubled the Tynesiders lead to send the home crowd wild, it was a classic Bowser goal. Gateshead once again took a few minutes to get started in the second half as relegation threatened Prescot tried to push forward for something out of the game, but that would happen.

Kris Gate made it 3-0 with a fine finish, it was Gate’s 5th goal of the season. The Prescot keeper was lucky not red after handling the ball outside the box. The resulting free kick was taking by Paul Brayson , sadly it was high, wide and not at all handsome.

Prescot Cables are the visitors to the International Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking to gain 3 points to help battle against relegation, Prescot currently sit one point above the drop zone.

Gateshead who have already secured a Play-off spot will want to keep in the winning way to carry into the Play-offs.
Ian Bogie could well carry on his squad rotation to keep the team fresh as they approach the important part of the season.

Gateshead’s three main strikers will all be looking to find the back of the net, Graeme Armstrong currently sits on 20 goals and is having a fantastic season since joining from Dunston Fed last summer. Davie Southern has 16 goals to his name, but has struggled to find the net in the last two and a half months only scoring twice in this time.

Meanwhile Paul Brayson has scored 5 since joining in February from York City, the much travelled former football league striker is playing slightly deeper and is making more than he scores at the moment.

All three strikers will be raring for Saturday to come and Bring on the Play-off’s!!!!!

Gateshead travelled to relegation threatened Stamford looking for their sixth win in a row, but sadly this was not to be.

Stamford took the lead on 33 minutes with Stamford’s Byrne getting the ball into Paul Musselwhite net.
It would not be until the second half when the Tynesiders pegged the score line back to 1-1, Paul Brayson (pictured below) was on hand to score his 5th goal of the season for Gateshead, from a 25 yard free kick.

Ian Bogie and Jeff Wrightson take the Tynesiders to 18th placed Stamford chasing a sixth win in a row.

Gateshead have no major injury worries ahead of the match, with Jamie Harwood shaking off the knock he got towards the end of the 5-1 win away to Marine last Saturday.
Carl Jones also was on the end of a very nasty tackle in the same match, but ran it off during the match, hopefully there will be no lasting damage.

As expected against Marine Bogie rotated his squad leaving Southern, Bowey and Gate on the bench. It wouldn’t be surprising if some other big names in the team also have a rest ahead of the Play-offs.

The Tynesiders really gave a supreme football lesson to one of the better UniBond Teams, Marine couldn’t handle the flowing passing game of Gateshead as they crashed to a 5-1 defeat.

Although many people will look at the score line, then see Marine finished the match with nine men, it was not the factor of being short on numbers that lead to Marines Play-off’s dreams all but come to an end.

Ian Bogies men where all over Marine like a rash spreading the ball like butter from right to left. Jamie Harwood and Wayne Phillips had the freedom of the wings, while Steve Salvin and Phil Turnbull both gave a commanding performance.

The opening goal came from a Jamie Harwood free kick which seen both centre backs Curtis and Jones storm into the box with Carl Jones (pictured hitting the ball for the goal) getting the final touch to open the scoring.

The second goal came from the penalty spot after a Marine player seen red for handling the ball on the line to stop in going in. Phil Cave (pictured placing the ball for the penalty) stepped up and calmly slotted his 10th goal of the season. Gateshead kept up the pressure until half time where the score had stayed at 2-0.
After half time the Marine just collapsed, they couldn’t handle the Gateshead extra man advantage.

Graeme Armstrong notched his 19th goal of the season on 64 minutes after some great build up play from the Heed midfield.

The match seen a red card for the second time after Marine substitute hacked down Carl Jones from behind.

Marine hit straight back on 65 minutes when Musselwhite could get to the ball after a Marine burst through the to hit looping ball into the net, not Musselwhites fault but a blemish on a otherwise perfect afternoon for the Heed.

Paul Brayson (pictured with Bowey after his goal)answered some critics with a lovely little shimmy in the 6 yard box side stepping two Marine defenders and putting the ball under the keepers legs to make it 4-1.

Armstrong then added to his goal tally with his 20th goal of the season. It rounded off a great afternoon in the sunshine on Merseyside. He could have added another two goals in injury time if it was not for two great saves from the Marine keeper.

Gateshead travel to Merseyside on National day looking for a Grand performance.

Paul Musselwhite will be looking to take his clean sheet run to five straight games, having kept clean sheets against Kendal Town, Ossett Town, Matlock Town and Prescot Cables. The veteran of over 600 league games may have his best years behind him but had stood tall and brave when needed since arriving from Harrogate Town to help with the Tynesiders promotion drive.

Also in sparkling form is striker Paul Brayson, who has set up three goals in two games. His role as striker has only produced three goals since he signed for the Heed after his release from York City, yet his experience is helping the team get goals through out the team. The former Reading and Cardiff City striker sometimes looks pressured on the ball, but cream always rises to the top, no doubt come Saturday he will be aiming for the back of the net.

Marine sit just outside the Play-offs, six points is all that is separating the Merseyside side team from Play-offs. So you can guarantee Marine will be pushing forward every time they get the ball.

Peter Cumiskey is going to be a big threat, a powerful forward and good in the air. Carl Jones will have his hands full, but is more than capable of keeping him at arms length.

Gateshead made it four wins in a row with the 2-0 victory away to Prescot Cables on Tuesday night.

Not only was it the fourth straight win, it was the fourth straight clean sheet in a row.
Phil Turnbull scored the Tynesiders first goal on 41 minutes, then Carl Jones secured the win with his goal 2 minutes later on 43 minutes.

A fantastic away victory for the Heed Army, Ian Bogies men will be wanting to carry the fine form into Saturdays match at Marine.

A rain soaked Gateshead edged out Matlock Town in the muddy conditions.

The Tynesiders settled the quicker but didn’t dominated until midway through the first half, when Davie Southern (pictured after his goal) pounced on Paul Brayson cross in the six yard box to slot home the opening goal.

Steve Bowey gave a captains performance in midfield, if he couldn’t get his foot to it, he would throw his body at it. Either way the ball wasn’t getting past him.
Likewise was Phil Turnbull, he was always calm and collected on the ball.

Just before half time Gateshead grabbed their second goal through a James Curtis header, he powered home from 12 yards to leave the Matlock Keeper no chance of getting to it.

After the break Gateshead found it hard to break down Matlock, Town closed down and kept the Heed in their own half for much of the second half.

Paul Musselwhite (pictured making a vital save) was called into action a few times, but coped very well and didn’t panic.

Matlock Preview

The Gladiators make the long trip from Derbyshire on Saturday looking for victory after twice not being able to beat the Tynesiders this season. A 2-1 defeat in the FA Trophy in November at the hands of Gateshead followed the 1-1 draw in the league in September.

On Bank Holiday Matlock suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Hednesford, with Simon Barraclough grabbing Matlock Towns only goal. Barraclough also got on the score sheet with two goals in the good Friday match at home to Buxton which they won 3-0.

Barraclough will be wanting to add to his 3 goals from last weekend and Gateshead will have to be on guard for this fox in the box.

The Heed currently has three players in double figures in the goal charts this season, those players being Graeme Armstrong, Davie Southern and Jamie Harwood.

Gateshead took the lead after just 15 seconds, with left wing wonder Wayne Phillips grabbing the early goal. It was Paul Brayson who passed the long diagonal ball to Phillips to set him up for the goal.

The marvel that is Craig “Beckham” Baxter (pitcured) doubled the Heed’s lead with a shot that found the top corner, this came after Kris Gates battled to get the ball through to Baxter and he sent the travelling Heed Army wild in celebration!

The scored stayed the same as the Tynesiders had done enough stay onto at half time.

After the break Ian Bogie’s men stretched there lead further with Wayne “Wonder Boy “ Phillips (pictired) bagging his second of the match, and his 9th goal of the season.

On the back of Good Friday’s 3-0 win over Kendal Town, The Tynesiders travel to Ossett Town looking for cement their place in the Play-Offs.

Ossett Also won on Friday, they beat Frickley Athletic 3-2 with Midfeilder Aiden Savory netting for Ossett.

Town currently sit 10th in the UniBond Premier Table, they have six matches left this season and are safe from the drop but fall short of making a push for the Play-Off’s.

Ossett have experienced goal keeper Paul Cuss who was once on the books of Huddersfield Town, the Heed front line will have to be on top form to make the Ossett net ripple.

Sadly we couldn’t find Any Ossett goals, but here is some scored against Ossett Town from their match with Hednesford earlier in the season

Hopefully the Heed Army can come away with all three points and a bag full of goals!!

Gateshead gave the Heed Army a big lift with a commanding home performance in testing weather conditions.

In the strong winds and spells of sleet and snow the Tynesiders took the lead through a Phil Cave (pictured) penalty, this was Cave’s 9th for the Heed after his summer move from Newcastle United.

Heed legend Steve Bowey doubled the lead with a header on 56 minutes. Then on 69 minutes Paul Brayson grabbed his 3rd goal of the season in Heed shirt.

Hopefully Gateshead can carry the form from this game into Bank Holiday Monday match at Ossett.

Two Months ago Gateshead made a transfer offer for Whitby Towns goal machine that is Danny Brunskill.

Brunskill decided not to take the move to Promotion chasing Gateshead, But did he make the right move????

Currently Brunskill is one of the UniBond’s tops goal scorers as he has been for near 7 years. Sadly Whitby are sitting in the drop zone, but Danny’s goals don’t seems to be enough to keep them out of the relegation zone at the moment.

His loyalty to Whitby has to be commended in the day and age when football players chase the bigger and better deal. Will Danny be looking at his current situation and think I could have been chasing promotion on Tyneside.

If Whitby loose the fight against the drop (god forbid, as we need all north east teams to stay up) will Brunskill be tempted to join up with the Heed Army.

Easter Weekend Preview

Gateshead will be hoping for a Good Friday this weekend for the visit of Kendal Town to the International Stadium.

The Heed will want to cement their Play Off Spot, and Fridays game will be the perfect starting place to gain 3 points over the Easter weekend.

Lee Ashcroft will bring his Kendal side to Gateshead looking for vital point to help Kendal stay clear of the relegation zone.

Kendal Town currently sit two points above the drop zone, they will no doubt want to grab some points and will be pushing for goals.

Paul Brayson will be available after his one match suspension he served over the weekend.

The second game over Easter weekend is away to Ossett Town, a must win game as is the Kendal Match.
Ossett are mid table and seem to be safe from relegation but out of reach of the Play Off’s.

If Gateshead can take six points over the Easter weekend it would surely gave them a great chance of staying in the Play Off’s for the rest of the season.

The Heed Army Blog predicts a 3-1 win over Kendal and a 2-1 win over Ossett.

The Tynesiders suffered yet another Defeat in there push for a play off place on Saturday.

Hednesford Town out played a lack lustre Gateshead lost 3-2, and slipped to 4th in the UniBond league table.

Phil Cave and Wayne Phillips scored for the heed but it wasn’t enough to get anything from this game.

Disappointment was the dish of the day at the International Stadium on Wednesday night, as hopes of winning the league were dashed.

The league leaders Witton came out on top of what was one of the most important games of the season.
368 people witnessed the crunch match which seen Albion’s Brownhill and Mcpherson grab the goals to give the Heed the hammer blow.

Witton Albion’s 18 point lead over the Tynesiders is too bigger gap to claw back, if promotion is to be achieved it will be through the play off’s.

As the depressed Heed Army drifted off into the dark of the night with sad faces, no doubt the player and coaching staff felt the same.

If ever a theme tune should be played at the end of the game it would have been this on Wednesday night.

Witton Albion Preview

The Heed’s biggest game of the season so, will happen 7.45pm at Gateshead International Stadium on Wednesday night.

League leaders Witton Albion are the visitors and they will want to wrap up the points to help them get another foot up the championship ladder.
This will be the third match between Witton and Heed this season, with Gateshead winning one of them games and the other ending in a 2-2 draw at Witton.

Witton currently have a 15 point lead on Gateshead in the UniBond league table, but Gateshead do have three games in hand on Albion. If and it’s a big if the Heed win their games in hand and beat Witton on Wednesday night they would only be 3 points behind Witton in the race for automatic promotion.

Ian Bogie may have a Injury worry with striker Paul Brayson hobbling at the end of Saturdays extra time and penalty battle with Skelmersdale according to eye an witnesses. Fingers crossed he can shake it off. Wednesday’s match is the last match Brayson will be available before his suspension starts on Saturday.

Sadly the Tynesiders failed to make their second Cup Final of the season, after falling short in a penalty shoot out.

Skelmersdale took the lead on 6 minutes, with United’s Almond grabbing the goal. Skelmersdale held on to that 1-0 lead till half time.
After half time Gateshead levelled the score with Graeme Armstrong netting on the 64th minute.

Sadly the score stayed the same until full time and the game went into Extra Time.
Jamie Harwood edged the Heed in front on the 92minute, this goal looked to be the winner. Sadly James Curtis (pictured) fouled a Skelmersdale player in the box to gave away a crucial penalty on 113 minutes.
George Donnelly put the penalty away, and reportedly celebrated by punching James Curtis . Donnelley seen red.

Extra Time came to an end, Penalty’s was to decide the winners of this eventful match .

Veteran Paul Musselwhite saved the opening penalty to gave the Heed a flying start, followed by Craig Baxter’s powerful penalty kick.

Skelmersdale Peview: League Cup Semi final

Two busses full are making the journey to Skelmersdale for the UniBond League Cup Semi Final. There will be over 100 Heed fans making there presence felt in song.

Gateshead go into the Semi Final unbeaten in 12 games, and will be chomping at the bit to reach a second up cup final of the season.
While Gateshead will be favourites for the clash, Skelmersdale will fancy their chances as they are pushing for promotion from the UniBond Div 1 North. They currently sit top of the league and will want to show why they are top of their league.

Skelmersdale United’s danger man will be George Donnelly, no doubt he will be wanting to add to his 21 goals he has already scored. While at the other end of affair Ryan Mcmahon will be trying to keep the Tynesiders from putting the ball in his net.

Paul Brayson will no doubt want to help the Heed reach a second Final as he is not eligible to play in the Durham Cup Final at the Stadium Of Light.

Ian Bogie (pictured)will be wanting to set his stall out early at Skelmersdale, Does he go 433 or 442 ??? Only time will tell. The strike forces of Brayson, Armstrong and Southern will put the fear of got in to any UniBond defence.

Gateshead left it late to seal the win over Lincoln Utd on Wednesday night.

Steve Salvin (pictured) opened the scoring with his 9th goal of the season on the 83rd minute, then Paul Brayson doubled the lead on the 89th minute to seal the 3 points.

This result leaves the Tynesiders stay in 3rd place in the UniBond, but the heed have reduced the gap to just 12 points on leaders Witton. With two games still in hand on Witton and a home game against the leaders, if the heed can with them games it would leave Gateshead only 3 points behind.

The Tynesiders grabbed a last minute equalizer to spare their blushes at home to Eastwood Town on Saturday afternoon.

Jamie Harwood was the man to grab the 90th minute goal, that kept the Heed third in the UniBond table.
New striker Paul Brayson seen red after a second yellow card, this came after Eastwood had also been reduced to 10 men earlier in the match.

A disappointing match made even more disappointing when the news that league leaders Witton Albion had lost.

How It Stands So Far

Here we are two thirds through the season and where are we?

Well one final, a semi final in the league cup and currently sitting 3rd in the UniBond, not bad for Ian Bogies first full season in charge with the Tynesiders.

The Championship and automatic promotion does seem out of reach for GFC, With Witton Albion being 16 points clear at the top of the league. The Heed still have to play Witton at home this season and could claw back 3 points, but it would take a collapse in Witton fortunes for the Tynesiders to over take them at the summit of the league.

A Durham Cup Final place is already in the bag versus Sunderland AFC Reserves, with the venue for the Final being at Sunderland AFC’s Stadium Of Light. The Final will be Proud moment for every Gateshead fan to see our boy’s run out on a pitch where the cream of Carling Premiership play every other week.
Some GFC fans felt uneasy about the final being at Sunderland, with Sunderland Reserves making the final also. Fears of home advantage for SAFC Reserves was soon put to rest as the reserves do not play or train at the SOL.

Chairman Graham Woods efforts to make the Durham Cup final a show peace has to be commend, as hopefully the Durham Cup Final can be held annually at the SOL.
A second final could be in the offering, if The Heed can get passed Skelmersdale Utd away on the 8th march. Skelmersdale are currently riding high in the UniBond Div 1 North, they will no doubt be a hard team to play away and will be very much up for making a cup final themselves.

Ian Bogie (pictured)has settled his team down after a mid season blip, which seen GFC slip just out of reach of the automatic promotion spot.
The addition of former Newcastle, Reading and Cardiff City striker Paul Brayson has added much need depth in the Heeds front line. His experience and all round play has already seen him score a fantastic free kick on his debut away to Witton in the League Cup.

Gateshead take on UniBond Prem new boys Eastwood Town for the second time this season, It was a 3-1 opening day of the season win for Gateshead the last time these teams played. Eastwood have settled well into UniBond Prem life and have hovered around the Play-Offs for much of the season.

A dominant Gateshead swept aside second place Fleetwood to pick up all 3 points on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Captain Steve Bowey and left back Phil Cave (pictured) were enough to give the Heed Army victory over the fellow promotion chasers.

A crowd of 365 witnessed the Heed Army continue there good form, hopefully they will come back for next weeks Home game against Eastwood Town. The Tynesiders will be looking for a similar result to the opening day of the season, when the heed won 3-1 at Eastwood.

Sadly Paul is having a bad time at the moment as well documented in the nation wide press.

Paul memorably helped save Gateshead FC, when club sponsors pulled the plug on sponsorship in December 2001.

It was reported GAZZA gave £10,000 of his own money to help save the Tynesiders in that troubled time, a fantastic piece of generosity you have to a agree.

The Heed Army owes Paul Gascoigne a big thank you for his support, Now we can give Paul our support by saying get well soon Paul!!!!!!!!!

You have have heard a familier voice on NPLTV of late, this has been none other than the Heed Army's very own Alan Percival.

Alan has written about his first commentating experiences since joining Unibond coverage on NPLTV, hope you enjoy reading.

Alan's words:

Those who frequent the forum will know by now that I’m commentating on NPLTV (if you don’t you must be wise and ignore most of my postings). I’ve been lucky enough so far that I have covered three Gateshead matches in four months.

It is quite a privilege to watch the team you support and talk about them (without being bias) for others. Although it means I sometimes have to miss matches I would normally attend just as a supporter (which hasn’t been too bad either, just the away trips to Ilkeston and Guiseley as, being in South Yorkshire, I miss most home matches anyway) I do get to see our rivals in action and see how they are progressing on the field of play.

The first game I covered at North Ferriby against Fleetwood was fairly nerve wracking. For a start I didn’t know if it was for real after having spoken to one person, my main travelling partner and excellent cameraman Michael, on the phone.

Luckily the day went well, apart from commentating in the disabled area on my knees, and I received some pretty good feedback from each set of supporters who watched the highlights.

I have tried to improve on each game and watching the Frickley Thriller (well the second half at least when we scored four to win the game) and then some of the Witton game from last Saturday it was quite obvious where the improvements were.

Commentating on the first Gateshead match (the ULCC 4th round game against Sheffield) was scary stuff, until the game started. Going up to the Int. and sitting by your own fans was fairly daunting, but as soon as it started it was just like normal, except I had to stay neutral and say how good the Sheffield goals were without being disappointed.

This game was nothing compared to that Frickley game though. It was the second time I had been to do commentary on a Frickley match and the first one had seen drama with the home sides keeper sent off and punch-ups galore (a warm-up if you like for our match).

Staying neutral for that match was almost impossible saying things like: “Frickley are winning 3-0 and have all but won this match” and “what an incredible turn around by Ian Bogie’s side. They now lead 4-3” whilst slumped in my seat and then trying not to jump all around the main stand in joy.

The game caused controversy as we all know and after the game I was in the board room with the video watching the sending off for the elbow on Thommo with the Frickley chairman and the player himself saying it was his arm (they didn’t appeal surprisingly). Not a situation I wanted to be in because I knew and we all know it was a blatant foul.

Speaking of Thommo he has caused me no end of trouble because I have to remind myself not say the nickname and stick to Thompson. Most of the time I get it right but you just know the name on the highlights will be the one time I say Thommo is the mad rush to get brain messages to mouth. Still he only had five minutes at Witton so hardly had to say his name.

The next game will be just as hard to stay neutral as I have put my name down to commentate on the Skelmersdale Semi-Final match. I have seen Skelmersdale this season in the Quarter-Final win over Marine. Both sides were either not bothered or performed badly. If it is the latter we have nothing to fear.

Witton 2 Gateshead 2

The Tynesiders twice took the lead at Witton Albion, but were unable to the grab the win.
Graeme Armstrong put Gateshead 1-0 after 10 minutes with a cool looping finish over former heed keeper Jon Kennedy in the Witton net.

Witton showed they are no push over’s and levelled soon after, but the Heed was not to be denied the lead again. Davie Southern headed home a perfect ball to retake the lead on 21 minutes.

After half time Witton Albion pushed and got level again, to show why they are top on the UniBond. It finished 2-2.

A great result, as Witton have not dropped a point at home this season, but does this leave the Heed army’s Dreams of the title in shreds??? Time will tell as Witton have to visit the International Stadium still this season and Gateshead have three games in hand. Is Witton Albion’s 16 point lead to much to real in though.

Witton 0 Gateshead 1 (League Cup)

The Tynesiders took on UniBond League leaders Witton Albion in the quarter final of the League Cup on Saturday, and progressed to the semi’s.

Debutant Striker Paul Brayson (pictured Down on the right) opened his account in style, with a 20 yard free kick that curled into the back of the net on the 70th minute.

Gateshead were without David Southern in there team, he did not even feature on the bench, Sparking talk of being rested or even on his way out of the club.

Monday nights Heed Army Blog man of the match Paul Talbot made his also the starting line up for the second match running, a much deserved run out for the loyal and talented left wing back.

Although this was a great result, the real test will come next Saturday when the Tynesiders are back at Witton for the crunch League tie.

On a cold night when the cold could change a man for life, Gateshead battled to the bitter end and got the goal to take Heed Army to the Durham cup final.

The first half was a war of attrition with a Spennymoor leaving six to seven players in there own half. This left the Tynesiders running into brick walls and out of idea's to break down this resolute defence.

the second half also seen Spennymoor players stay in there own half, and trying to catch Gateshead on the break. Paul Musselwhite was called upon to save the day when a spennymoor play was one on one with him. the veteran keeper kept his cool and smothered the ball from his feet.

The game went to extra time, Gateshead came into there own and had chance after chance. At least five clear cut chances feel to Gateshead players in the box, one notable missed effort happened after Graeme Armstrong glanced a header over the bar from 6 yards.

With minutes to go till penalty's, young striker Ben Hutchinson scrambled home a shot from 8 yards to send the home crowd wild, and take the Heed Army to the final of the Durham Cup.

Sorry For Getting It Wrong

Firstly the Heed Army Blog would like to say sorry for jumping the gun and announcing the signing of Paul Brayson.

The news broke on Thursday afternoon that he had agreed to sign for Gateshead Football Club, but since the news broke Paul has not become a Heed player. It has emerged that a Football league side are interested in signing Brayson and talks have halted.

The Heed Army Blog is sincerely sorry for making this announcement, when in fact nothing had been signed and sealed. The Blog takes all things GFC very serious and feels very guilty for miss leading GFC Supporters and regular readers of the Blog.

Hopefully in the coming week we will find out If Paul is to become part of the Heed Army’s push for promotion from the UniBond Premier.

Gateshead Football Club have reportedly landed Paul Brayson After his released from York City.

Brayson a Former Reading and Cardiff City player has been a long time target of the Tynesiders, and signed for York last summer after but has found first team football as a striker hard to come by.

Paul did have a stint in a Heed shirt on loan from Northwich Vitoria a few seasons a ago and made a instant impact, His addition to the Gateshead squad will mean we have more cover and options on the attacking side.

Gateshead where not the only team in the race to get Brayson signature, with former club Northwich Victoria and Local Rivals Blyth Spartans also being talked about.

Paul played in the FA Cup third round at the Stadium of Light for Northwich, and attracted a lot of local media attention with being a local lad.

This good news also comes at a time when big James Curtis is also coming back to full fitness to help shore things up at the back for the Heed.

A fantastic win for the Heed Army down at Fleetwood on Tuesday night, this win takes Gateshead 3 points behind second placed Fleetwood.

The man of the moment Graeme Armstrong grabbed another two goals to give Gateshead a moral boosting win in the chase for promotion.

Kris Gate opened the scoring in the second half after a goalless first half. Soon after Fleetwood pegged a goal back before Armstrong grabbed the first of his brace. Once again Fleetwood levelled the score line.
The Cod Army couldn’t handle the pressure from the Heed and Super Graeme Armstrong wrapped up a fine win with his 16th goal of the season in front of a crowd of 550.

The search for a new Heed striker has been in the local papers of late, with talk of former Reading, Cardiff and Newcastle Striker Paul Brayson topping Gateshead's shopping list.
Paul had short spell in a Heed shirt of loan from Northwich Vitoria a few seasons ago, and was a big hit with the fans for his powerful and skilful display.

Another name that has been talked about is Lee Kerr from Whitley Bay, Kerr had trials with Newcastle United last season and several football league sides. Kerr has been described as a skilful attacking player, who can fit in easily on either wing or as a striker.

With the Tynesiders letting Ian Robson return to the Northern League, after he failed to make a impact at UniBond level, find themselves short on cover upfront. A major problem to have for a team pushing or promotion.

Goals have not been hard to come by, with David southern and Graeme Armstrong both on 14 goals for the season.. But if injury was to hit o a red card the Heed are gonna be ankle deep in the pig muck.

Talk of the possible return of the legend that is Craig Nelthorpe (Pictured) to the club have had cold water splashed on the flames, with his Club Doncaster Rovers unwilling to loan Craig to the UniBond level. He has since sign on loan at Halifax Town in the Blue Square Premier.

The Cream always rises to the the top it would seem!

Gateshead found them selves 3-0 down at half time away to 10 man Frickley, with the game seeming as good as over, Bogie's words must have made the difference at half time.

It took untill the 74th minute for Jamie Harwood to start the Heed fight back, scored the Tynesiders second on 76 minutes, and just 3 minutes later Gateshead was level with Steve Bowey Graeme Armstrong grabbing the goal.

Davie "Chicken legs" Southern (pictured below) wrapped up the points for Gateshead on 88 minutes, a scoreline no Heed fan could have imagined at half time.

How The Heed Has Voted!!!!

A week before Christmas Eve a Voting Poll was added to the Blog, asking what kind of Player the Heed Army would want for Christmas. Although the question was put tongue in cheek the results are deadly serious.

The Voting poll options were:

A New Striker

A New Midfield Player

A New Defender

A New Goal Keeper

54% answered a new striker showing that the Heed Army Strongly believe options upfront need to be strengthened.
In second place was a new defender with 22% of the vote, James Dudgeon signed during the voting poll, so many heed fans wishes were granted in time for Christmas.
16 % of the vote went in favour of a new midfielder, yet the Gateshead midfield already holds McClen, Bowey, Harwood, Gate, Salvin and Phillips.
Only 6% voting for getting a new goal keeper, yet in recent reports Keen has had indifferent performances.

What we can take away from the Voting Poll and recent performances on the pitch, is that the fans feel new faces and new ideas are need to keep Gateshead as competitive in the top half of the UniBond, Mainly the play offs.

The Heed has been linked with a few top rated UniBond Strikers in the past few months in the local press, yet no movement has happened.
Scott Bell was linked with the Tynesiders but his loan move to Newcastle Blue Star stopped any movement on that deal, sadly since Bell has moved permanently to Blue Star after his loan move.
Danny Brunskill was another UniBond target from Whitby Town, yet attempts to get Brunskill in a heed shirt failed.
The Failure to attract one striker is worrying to say the least

Although Our current Strike force of Davie Southern and Graeme Armstrong (pictured) have 23 goals Between them there is no player capable of producing the goals from the bench.
Ian Robson has failed to make the Step up from the Northern League, while Heed legend and club leading goal scorer Paul Thompson has sadly seen better days at this level.

With the dreams of the Unibond title slipping away game by game, surly a fresh face or two in the side would give the team some new ideas and manger new options.

Its safe to say that the Heed Army know you just can not through bags of money at the team but action does need to be taken to help

The good news that James Curtis (pictured) could be playing again by the end of January will sure help stop the silly needless goals Gateshead have let in over the past two months.

Gateshead crashed into the new year with a Horrible defeat to say the least away to Whitby Town.

The Tynesiders took a 1-0 lead after Phil Cave (Pictured) slotted home a penalty, and held the lead to half time.

In the second half the Heed let in two goals, with the winner being scored by Whitby fan favourite Danny Brunskill.

Same old story, different match day. Similar to Wednesday night against Farsley Celtic, we started well and dominated the first half, taking the lead midway through the first half when Graeme Armstrong instinctively headed a Phil Cave cross into the net.

Gateshead passed the ball well for the first forty minutes, but once again massively lacked in the final 3rd of the pitch. Wayne Phillips playing in a floating free role behind the front two once again caused the opposition problems. They didn't like him running at them. However at times he held on to the ball slightly too long, not that there were many options available to give it to (without going backwards).

Gateshead really should've gone on to put Ashton out of sight in the second half. But once again we suffered big time Charlie headitis, with certain players not being able to battle when it starts getting tough.

Credit has to go to Ashton as they kept going and got their reward with 10 minutes to go. Aitken came for a cross and failed to deal with it, his punch fell to the edge of the area only to be dispatched into a partially unguarded net. It probably was a foul on Aitken but the truth is he should've done better. Aitken made up for it with a good save late on to save our blushes.

I've run out of answers with this current squad, they did it at the start of the season but I just can't see them getting back to that form. The wheels have well and truly started to come off, hard decisions need to be made now before we're out of sight.

Did ok, 1 good save to stop them winning it. Possibly fouled for their equaliser, but still should've done better.

Solid, with a few good crosses.

Not one of his better games, but a good cross for the goal. Both fullbacks had little protection.

Solid performance, didn't put a foot wrong and dealt with all that needed to be.

A couple of good blocks, but went missing in a 3 man midfield.

Started well but once again faded out the game and was substituted.

Huffed and puffed, had the ball in the net to be ruled off side. Lacked a final product and quality passing.

Phillips 7

Again looked dangerous, but with this new free role he seems to be overplaying it a little too much. I would say better deployed on the left touchline, but what's the point if he crosses it into the middle and there's no one there.

Southern 6

Not really at the races today after scoring a good goal on Wednesday night. Probably would be better deployed as a right winger?

Armstrong 6.5

Good instinctive finish with a header. However when given time on the ball he panics and invariably picks the wrong option.

Not at any stage this season have we utilised his speed by putting balls for him to run on to. Everything is into his feet, and strength is not his asset.

Came on and didn't do much. A couple of runs on the wing.

Gateshead crashed out of the FA Tophy at Farsley Celtic on Wednesday night.

David Southern (pictured) was on target for the Tynesiders to take his tall to 10 goals for the season.

Farsley Celtic now entertain Alfreton Town in the next round of the Trophy.

Gateshead look set to still have Paul Thompson and Steve Salvin (pictured) in the centre of the makeshift defence as the Heed take on Farsley for a second time in a week.

Farsley of the Blue Square Premier showed they are no push over at the International Stadium by pegging back the score minutes after going one down.
Farsley have also installed caretaker manger John Daecey as the new manger, he has been in charge since early November after Lee Sinnott left to take charge of Port Vale.

If Gateshead overcome Farsley they could be at home to either Alfreton or Southport in the next round.

The Bookmakers have Gateshead 8/1 to win the replay on Wednesday night, lets hope all heed fans have a few pound on to help pay for them extra Christmas drinks!!!!

A bright and inventive Gateshead were denied a place in the next round (at the first time of asking) by a magnificent drive from outside the area.

Football Conference side Farsley Celtic looked like giants compared with our lads at kick off, but come the final whistle it was our players who looked bigger. The experienced campaigners such as Steve Torpey can consider themselves lucky to still be in the FA Trophy.

Gateshead started the game brightly and had the lion share of possession and chances. A makeshift central defensive pairing of Steve Salvin and Paul Thompson put in a good shift together and kept the Farsley front two under wraps for most of the game. The performance was a vast improvement on the way we've played recently in the league. In the first half David Southern looked more like the player of last season, cutting inside and firing in left footed efforts from distance. However the main man of the first half was undoubtedly left winger Wayne Phillips who gave the Farsley Right-Back an torrid afternoon. Roaming in off the left touchline time and time again the full back didn't know what to do.

Both sides had good chances which they couldn't take, with the wood work coming to the rescue at times. Gateshead looked to produce from the wing with Phillips, Baxter and Southern delivering good crosses into the middle, unfortunately we lack a sniffer in the box who naturally knows where to be to get on the end of such deliveries.

Half-time 0-0

Farsley looked better in the second half but it was Gateshead who made most of the chances. Just when it looked like a goal would never come for the Heed, Graeme Armstrong latched onto a high ball on the edge of the box to loop a header (Which seemed to be in the air forever) over the keeper and into the back of the net. Unfortunately just as the Heed Army were going crazy, moments later Simeon Bambrook unleashed an unstoppable drive from outside the area which had Peter Keen at full stretch to no avail as it found the far corner.

Gateshead had chances to win it late on as they surged forward. Davy Southern got in a couple of times but indecision haunted him when he should possibly have pulled the trigger. Gateshead edged the game on possession and chances, so Farsley will be only too happy to get away with a replay.

It's a replay on Tuesday night in Farsley, let's hope we can make it to the next round but maybe more importantly turn our cup form into league form where the lads battle against lesser teams.

Some crucial saves, good handling from high balls. More like the Keeno of old. Great save near the end to make sure of a draw.

Solid display. Wasteful at times with long balls, but some good crosses.

Occasionally his positioning was off, but you can ask more of an emergency centre half than to battle and make it difficult. He did his job well, reminded me of that time he played against the enemy up the road at centre half and marked them out of the game.

Strong against a bigger lad in Steve Torpey. A great display by him and Thomo.

Gate 6
Not a great game by Kris Gate. His passing was off and he looked a yard off the pace at times.

Phillips 8
Outstanding once again from Phillips. He ran the first half, cutting inside and giving the Farsley defence all sorts of problems.

McClen 7
An improved performance on the last game. First half he got stuck in and not in the crazy two footed manner. He played some intelligent passes, but started to fade a little towards the end.

Bowey 6
Not one of Bowsers best games. He played the more advanced midfield role where he should be, but unfortunately his passing was off today. He needs to be given more protection in central midfield (Salvin alongside him maybe?)

Southern 7
The first half he looked more like the Davy Southern of last season, cutting inside and taking shots on. Second half his control from long balls was exceptional, but the confidence had faded. He looked to pass it when he should've taken it on himself and have a dig, he also over elaborated at times (Maybe he should keep it simple until the confidence comes back?).

Armstrong 7
Great looping header for the goal. Grafted well all game, but he needs to learn when to make runs to the near post, when to come short and when to stay long.

Harwood 7
A couple of good direct runs, but needs to try and get more involved in winning the ball back when we lose possession.

Gateshead suffered their third league defeat in a row at the International stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Marine started the better and got a goal inside 3 minutes, after Craig Baxter missed a through ball which led to the goal.

Gateshead seemed to have a lot of the ball yet couldn’t get the ball passed midfield, leaving the forwards in no mans land for much of the game.
Negative balls from the midfield left little chances for the forwards to get any hold of the games, most balls from McClen finding the full backs and wingers.
Phillips can hold his head high after his performance in midfield, after he got forward back across, everything his team mates didn’t do.

In the second half Craig Baxter’s cross come shot found its way into the back of the net to draw Gateshead level after 4 minutes.

As in the first half the Heed had much of the ball without it moving forward, yet the time bomb that was the Gateshead midfield and defence did give to much room to the Marine forward and he slotted home from distance to give Marine a good win over Play off chasing Gateshead.

In all the game was there for Gateshead to take, yet we showed the fight of a Buddhist monk at prey time. If the Heed really count themselves as one of the teams that can gain promotion from the UniBond some fight and heart need to be injected in to the players.

The fans will turn up at games, lets hope the players do the same!!!

Farsley Celtic in the First Round

After Giving Boston United a footballing lesson the Heed have been handed a good home draw with Farsley Celtic Of the Blue Square Premier in the Next round of the FA Trophy.

Farsley Celtic were in the UniBond a few seasons ago and have had a fantastic few seasons with two promotions in that time. This was achieved under the management of Lee Sinnott.
Sinnott has Just left Farsley to take up the Managers post at Port Vale in the Football league.

The big game will be at the International Stadium on December 15th, so be there!!!!!!!

Boston United looked shell-shocked after the first ten minutes of the game on Saturday, they was out worked, out paced and out played by the Mighty Heed.

Wayne Phillips was electric down the left wing, the Boston defence couldn’t handle Gateshead’s version of Ryan Giggs.

Graeme Armstrong was also in dangerous form skinning the defender time after time, which lead to the keeper bringing down Armstrong in the box after he left the defence in his wake.
Up stepped Phil Cave to bury the ball into the back of the net.
After Cave’s spot kick Gateshead continued to dominated play against the Blue Square Premier visitors, with some stylish passing and great vision which has become Gateshead's trade mark since the appointment of Ian Bogie.

The second half seen Boston try and step it up and come at Gateshead in search of the equalizer, it came on 65 minutes when Boston’s Froggatt scored.
Gateshead came back from this body blow straight away and pushed forward, one man who deserved a goal got the goal to put the Heed back in front. The cry’s of OH LAY OH LAY OH LAY OH LAY STEEVIE BOWEEEEEY went up after he got the ball in the back of the Boston net.

Boston could have levelled it Hitting the post in the dieing moments of the game, but the game was Gateshead’s and a well deserved result.

Three players that haven’t been mentioned in the match report need to be praised for fantastic performances. Firstly on loan defender Carl Jones made his debut and he battled right to the very end, was a joy to watch win every ball.
Like wise it was a joy to watch Richard Flynn along side Jones, Flynn Battled for every thing and came out on top.
Last but not least was Peter Keen (pictured) after a lay off there was no rust in his game, he was there for every cross and shot.

Gateshead could have new loan singing Carl Jones in the starting line up for the FA Trophy match at home to Boston United on Saturday.

Jones a defender on a months loan York City, will more than likely partner James Curtis (Pictured) in the centre on defence.
Meanwhile it is reported keeper Paul Musselwhite has to decide weather to return to Harrogate or Join the Heed on a permanent basis.
Musselwhite has been on top form in the Gateshead nets since arriving on loan from Harrogate Town, His departure would see Gateshead continue to find a Goal keeper of high quality.

The visitors Boston United formally of The Football League Two last year, will be out to stop Gateshead's FA Trophy Dreams. They currently occupy 10th spot in the Blue Square North, no doubt they will be wanting to an extended run in the competition after last year relegation by two leagues.

Gateshead travelled to Ilkeston with the aim of getting back on track after last weeks poor performance against Worksop Town.
Sadly the Heed could not do this, an average Ilkeston side out battled the promotion tipped Tynesiders in nearly all area’s of the pitch.

The midfield was only half productive with Steve Salvin and Wayne Phillips getting forward and back while McClen and Gate seemed to drift back in and out the game over the full 90 minutes.
With the midfield at six’s and seven’s the forward line seen no service at all during the game (if Pele himself was upfront the would have only been able to kick the grass) as bugger all made it past the midfield.

The only two half attempts for the hole game from Steve Salvin, he hit the wood work in the first half and also had a glancing header easily picked out the air by the Ilkeston keeper.

The defence was also put under pressure by the midfield inconsistency, which lead to the spells of pressure from Ilkeston.

Ilkeston took the lead on 44 minutes, the goal must have delt Gateshead a blow as the team never recovered.

With things not going Gateshead way Ian Bogie made some substitutions bringing Robson on for Southern and Thompson on for Armstrong later on. Even though Southern and Armstrong had few if any chances in front of goal, they would always be the men you could count on to get a goal from nothing.
Robson had little to no impact and has looked out of his depth for a many weeks now, also struggling against northern league opposition in the Durham cup.
Thompson is always a handful but has seen better days, yet he is a player you would always want on your bench because he can fill many positions, but to bring both Robson and Thompson on was like holding up the white flag and shortly after Gateshead let in the second goal.

If we are to be seriously considered promotion materiel then changes have to be made and tough decisions made.

It could have been a training game at the International Stadium on Wednesday night, Gateshead never got motoring but still won 2-0.

Midfielders Wayne phillips (pictured) and Steve Salvin got the goals, with Paul Musselwhite making two great saves at the other end of the pitch.

The game was not without incident after Former Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough striker Alun Armstrong was sent off half way through the first half for verbally abusing the referee.

Notable performances came from Craig Baxter looked a cut above dominating his part of the pitch, likewise for Phil Cave who never put a foot wrong all game.
Wayne Phillips was like a man on fire down the left hand side and skinned the Blue Star defenders faster that rabbi performing circumcision before his lunch break. Was a joy to watch!!!!

Scott Bell clapped and gave a nice wave to Heed Army after coming off, could this be a sign he’s on his way to the Heed in the coming weeks, only time will tell!!!!
